UV LED : From UV lamp replacement to new applications

UV LED technology

UV LED applications have entered a strong growth period, with multiple companies that are shifting now from old and expensive UV lamp to compact and energy efficient UV LED. 2014 market reach $90M and we are expecting a total UV LED market to reach $520M by 2019. This growth is explained by two reasons! Now, the growth is coming from the replacement of UV lamp by UV LED… But a new growth engine is under preparation, with the new applications that are enabled by UV LED, from industrial, medical to consumer applications. And it will bring a minimum of +10% of additional business by 2020, which is huge!

Several companies are also taking full benefit of this UV LED revolution in order to move in the supply chain for more added value, as the Yole Développement report UV LED – Technology, Manufacturing and Application Trends specify it.

We have interviewed Chad Taggard, Phoseon Vice President of Marketing and Business Development, in order to understand the actual dynamic of the company and what could happen in the next years. This is just another example of how semiconductor innovation can just change the industry…

Yole Développement : Can you introduce Phoseon Technology, its product lines in the UV LED field, associated history and current activities?

Phoseon : Phoseon is a privately held LED technology company located in Hillsboro, Oregon. Starting in 2002, Phoseon Technology pioneered the use of LEDs for UV curing applications using the polymerization process to dry inks, coatings, adhesives and other UV sensitive materials. Phoseon has led to the advancement of sophisticated LED based curing systems with a wide product portfolio serving OEM and end-user markets worldwide. With over 200 patents and trademarks and more than 30,000 units shipped, Phoseon has earned a worldwide reputation for innovation, quality and reliability.

“Phoseon is the only company that is 100% focused on delivering LED technology. All of Phoseon employees worldwide are dedicated specifically to supporting LED technology.”

YD : Also what differentiates Phoseon from other players?

Phoseon:

The Pioneer
In 2002, Phoseon Technology pioneered the use of LED technology for UV curing applications. Today, Phoseon has shipped over 30,000 units worldwide.

100% LED
Phoseon is the only company that is 100% focused on delivering LED technology. All of Phoseon employees worldwide are dedicated specifically to supporting LED technology.

Intellectual Property: Over 200 Patents
With over 200 patents and trademarks, Phoseon has earned a worldwide reputation for innovation, quality and reliability. Phoseon’s patented Semiconductor Light Matrix (SLM)™ technology encapsulates LEDs, Arrays, Optics and Cooling to maximize UV LED curing performance. Phoseon’s proprietary technology builds complete light engines from individual diodes versus using pre-packaged LEDs.

Reliability
Phoseon maintains over fifty UV LED curing lamps in various stages of lifetime testing at any given time. These light sources are stressed with decreased air flow, high temperatures and other parameters that mimic the harsh working conditions of industrial UV LED curing equipment.

Phoseon’s extensive reliability program consists of Highly Accelerated Lifetime Testing (HALT), Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and a manufacturing burn-in process where every product is built, calibrated, burned-in and recalibrated before customer delivery.
