Overview

Phoseon’s UV LED fiber curing systems offer many benefits for curing fiber and wire applications, including optical fiber, electrical and structural wire, and threads for smart fabrics. Phoseon offers complete UV LED systems that bring many advantages and benefits such as, fast and more consistent results around the full diameter of the fiber and wire, reduced operation costs, higher yield, and energy savings up to 70% over the more traditional UV or arc light curing.

UV LED curing uses a fine-tuned light source and proprietary optics that enable better process control, resulting in a superior and more consistent overall product. With a high demand for coated fiber and wire that range from insulation on copper wires used in everyday appliances to coated threads used in clothing material for comfort, UV LED technology enables the curing process to be done faster and more efficiently with less waste.

Fiber Optics

Phoseon Technology’s Fiber Curing System consists of a high intensity UV LED light source, which cures the coatings protecting the glass fibers, along with a Fiber Reflector Unit (FRU) to direct the UV energy around the circumference of the fiber. The UV LED light source and FRU are enclosed in an IP52 enclosure, protecting the system from liquid spills. LED technology drastically reduces energy consumption and significantly reduces work-piece surface temperature. For applications where process monitoring is required, the FRU includes a mounting feature for an irradiance monitoring system.

Electrical & Structural Wire

UV LED curing solutions are being rapidly adopted for curing coatings on metal wires. These coatings include electrical insulating material for magnet wire and corrosion protection for structural wire. Low operating costs, long lifetime, and low maintenance are just a few of the reasons that UV LED is being chosen over other curing methods. UV LED curing for electrical and structural wires uses a fine-tuned light source that enables better process control, resulting in a superior and more consistent overall product. This process control leads to higher yields and reduces scrap for manufacturers. Additionally, switching to UV curable coating material eliminates the VOCs contained in solvent based coatings.

Smart Fabrics

Smart fabrics, also known as smart textiles or electronic textiles, are fabrics embedded with special materials that enable new functionality in clothing. Smart fabrics have been developed with digital components and electronics embedded within them, as well as materials that react to the environment or the wearer’s body. These fabrics target a variety of applications, including medical, health and sports monitoring, such as heart rate, temperature, and respiration rates. They can also be used in military and industrial applications, where location and environmental variables are important.

Many materials being developed for smart fabric applications are UV curable. And since UV LED curing creates less heat than traditional arc or microwave lamps, it allows manufacturers to coat fine thread with specialized chemicals that may be damaged by heat.
