Ultraviolet Light for Viral Inactivation Shows Promise for Vaccine Research

Hillsboro, Oregon (May 27,2020) – Phoseon Technology announces use of the company’s KeyPro™ deep ultraviolet disinfection instrument to inactivate viruses as part of research being done at a major University in Europe. The university facility has a mission to study emerging infectious diseases and develop new vaccines and therapeutics to combat significant pathogens.

High-intensity ultraviolet light is well known for its ability to inactivate live viruses. Exciting new studies have shown that precisely controlled UVC can be tuned to partially or completely inactivate viruses without damaging recognition host protein structures. This new technology could open the door to new ways to create vaccines or manufacture new “killed” vaccines which are more stable and easier to transport. It also has the potential to widen virus research beyond biosafety level 3 (BSL3) laboratories enabling higher availability of life saving technologies and reducing costs.

Phoseon’s KeyPro™ is a proven decontamination system for labs to decontaminate microplates and labware as well as inactivate viruses, bacteria, molds, and fungi. Complete disinfection of laboratory contaminants can be accomplished by the KeyPro system in well under five minutes and at fraction of the cost of traditional methods. This unique control system allows for strict dosage control and is the key to potential vaccine development.
